hard driveToday while surfing the web on my main PC (5-6 years old)  I heard a clicking noise come from my CPU and at that point my PC froze and the mouse or keyword wouldn’t respond, my computer locked up.

I had a few problems some months ago with my PC not recognizing my hard drive when booting up but that problem solved itself.  Now that this clicking has come about, I decided to have a search around and see if anyone else had the same problem and i was pretty peed off at what i found…  My HARD DRIVES on its way out and about to FAIL!

All of the help articles i found mentioned  “the hard drive click of death” and suggested backing up immediately. Others said that the clicking can sometimes clicking can be related to a bad power supply or defected motherboard but i don’t think this is the case for me because my hard drive has worked none stop for the past 5-6 years.

How To Repair The ‘Hard Drive Click of Death’

The sad thing is, there is no easy fix. I read all sorts of “fixes” like putting the hard drive in the freezer to recover data and tapping the hard drive to make it spin, I’m not going to waste time with the drive,  I’m going to get my files and back them up onto a new hard drive. Luckily i have a external 750 gig Maxtor hard drive that i can use.

I read on some forums that you can use ‘Norton Ghost’ to make a clone image of your hard drive and then transfer the clone onto a new hard drive, i might give this a go.

This video shows you what goes on inside i hard drive that has the ‘click of death’.
